Hydrogen is in it for the Long-Haul

Hydrogen is in it for the Long-Haul

Read Time: 2 minutes

Long-haul trucks perform a fundamental and critical role in our supply chain, from transporting essentials and food to supermarkets, materials to factories, and packages to local distribution hubs. As the long-haul trucking industry moves towards meeting the goals of zero emissions and reduction in carbon for an eco-friendly future, it allows hydrogen to serve as the perfect future energy carrier for the industry.

Hydrogen, and specifically liquid hydrogen (LH2) serve as an ideal alternative energy carrier for more sustainability and allows for a level of incorporation into existing infrastructure. Ongoing innovations in hydrogen-powered transport have proved promising with studies showing that hydrogen will be an integral fuel source role in future long-haul trucking ventures. According to the North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE), “Hydrogen will be the viable economic choice for long-haul zero-emission duty cycles”. Trips that span over 180 miles with payloads above 24,000 lbs. were specified as the types of journeys in which hydrogen’s efficiency is best exemplified. In addition to economic viability, using LH2 to fuel heavy-duty truck fleets in the United States can reduce the emission of over 400 million metric tons of CO2 annually, support climate goals while still preserving national supply chain operations.

Transitioning large truck fleets to LH2 will ultimately accelerate infrastructure buildout. According to the recent ACT Expo conference takeaways on the future of hydrogen fueling stations, LH2 storage will be needed for smaller footprints benefits as they move to meeting the demand of potentially offering multiple different fuels in the coming future, including hydrogen options. Transitioning to LH2 with its increased energy density and purity allows for increased efficiency and extended period between refilling. LH2 enhanced performance and faster filling capabilities set hydrogen apart from other forms of renewable energy carriers.

GenH2’s mission is to accelerate the adoption of liquid hydrogen as the supreme energy carrier and create infrastructure solutions for the liquefaction, storage and transfer of liquid hydrogen. Providing a liquid hydrogen supply infrastructure for long-haul hydrogen trucks supply chain is included in GenH2’s mission, along with the on-demand and/or on-board supply for fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.
